New Union Baptist Church Core Beliefs

Scripture

We believe the Bible to be the complete Word of God: The Holy Bible was written by men divinely inspired and is a perfect treasure of heavenly instructions; that has GOD for its Author, salvation for its end, and truth without any mixture of error for its matter; that it reveals the principles by which God will judge us, and therefore is and shall remain to the end of the world, the true basis of all Christian union, and the supreme standard by which all human conduct, creeds, and opinions should be tried. (Genesis 1:1; John 1:1; 2 Timothy 3:16-17)

The True God

We believe: There is one, and only one, living and true God, an infinite, intelligent Spirit, whose name is Jehovah, the Maker and Supreme Ruler of heaven and earth; inexpressibly glorious in holiness, and worthy of all possible honor, confidence, and love; that in the unity of the Godhead there are three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, equal in every divine perfection, and executing distinct but harmonious offices in the great work of redemption. (Genesis 1:1; John 1:1; Acts 2:1-4)

the atonement

We believe: In the atonement made by Christ as the only basis of salvation, the only means of reconciliation, the only ground of justification. Man is by nature a sinner, guilty, condemned, and lost, and but for the atonement made by Christ, helpless and hopeless. (John 1:1; Romans 5:1-11)

repentance

We believe: In the absolute necessity of repentance. The theme of John the Baptist was “repent ye” and “believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.” The apostles “went out and preached that men should repent” (Mark 6:12; see Romans 10:9; 6:23).

salvation

We believe: The most important thing to every individual is the personal salvation of the soul. (John 3:16-18; Romans 10:9)

We believe: Every soul, which is unregenerate (unconvinced) and unbelieving, is lost no matter how much we love them or how lovable they may be. “…he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God” (John 3:18; see Romans 10:9).

We believe: The Holy Scriptures teach the blessing of salvation is made free to all by the Gospel; that it is the immediate duty of all to accept Jesus by a cordial and obedient faith. Nothing can prevent the salvation to the greatest sinner on earth, except his own voluntary refusal to submit to the Lord Jesus Christ. To refuse Jesus will subject him/her to eternal condemnation. (John 3:1-18; Romans 10:9)

regeneration

We believe: The Holy Scriptures teach that in order to be saved we must be regenerated or born again; that regeneration consists in giving a holy disposition to the mind; that it is effected in a manner above our comprehension by the power of the Holy Spirit, so as to secure our voluntary obedience to the Gospel; and that its proper evidence is found in the holy fruits we bring forth to the glory of God. (2 Corinthians 5:17-18; Titus 3:5)

Faith and Justification

We believe: Repentance and faith are sacred duties, and also inseparable graces, wrought in our souls by the regenerating Spirit of God; whereby being deeply convinced of our guilt, danger and helplessness and of the way of salvation by Christ, we turn to God with unfeigned contrition, confession, and supplication for mercy; at the same time 37 heartily receiving the Lord Jesus Christ as our Prophet, Priest, and King, and relying on Him alone as the only and all-sufficient Savior. (Titus 3:7; Romans 4:25; 5:18)

(Titus 3:7; Romans 4:25; 5:18)

Sanctification

We believe: Sanctification is the process which, according to the will of God, makes us partakers of His holiness; that it is a progressive work that is begun in regeneration and is carried on in the hearts of the believers by the presence and power of the Holy Spirit, the Sealer and Comforter. Sanctification progresses with the continual use of the Word of God, self–examination, self-denial, watchfulness, and prayer. (2 Thessalonians 2:13)

Perseverance of the Saint

We believe: The Scriptures teach that only real believers will endure to the end. Their persevering for Christ is the grand mark which distinguishes them from superficial professors; that a special Providence watches over their welfare, and they are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation. (Ephesians 1:13-14; Philippians 1:6)

The church

We believe: The Church of Jesus Christ is a body of baptized believers, who are called out of the world and into fellowship and service to preach the Gospel and to keep the ordinances and represent the interest of Christ’s kingdom in the world. (Matthew 16:18)

church membership and officers

We believe: Only regenerated, converted people should become members of the church. We believe the Scriptural officers of a church are PASTORS and DEACONS. (Romans 10:9; Philippians 1:1)

Baptism and the lord's supper

We believe: Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost (John 3:5). This is to show forth Jesus’ crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. Baptism symbolizes our death to sin and resurrection to a new life. The Lord’s Supper uses unleavened bread and wine to commemorate the dying love of Christ and the forgiveness of our sins. As Christ has forgiven us, we are commanded to forgive others. (Matthew 26:26; 1 Corinthians 11:28-32)

the christian sabbath

We believe: The first day of the week is the Lord’s Day, or Christian Sabbath, and for religious purposes should be kept sacred. (John 20:1; 1 Corinthians 16:2)

mission

We believe: Mission is every Christian’s responsibility. In every legitimate way, all the time, everywhere, according to ability, we should seek to spread a knowledge of Jesus and the way of salvation. (Matthew 28:19-20)

the world to come

We believe: The Scriptures teach that the end of the world is approaching; and at the last day Christ will descend from heaven and raise the dead from the grave for final judgment; a permanent separation will then take place; the wicked will be adjudged to endless punishment, the righteous to endless joy, and this judgment will fix forever the final state of men in heaven or hell, on the basis of their salvation in Christ. (Revelation 21:1-6)

civil government

We believe: The Scriptures teach that civil government is of divine appointment, for the interest and good of society, and magistrates are to be prayed for, conscientiously honored and obeyed; except only in things opposed to the will of our Lord Jesus Christ. (Romans 13:1-2)

ways to join the church

There are three (3) ways in common use by which one may become a member of the

New Union Baptist Church Family:

  1. By receiving Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior and being immersed in baptism.
  2. By letter – to move your membership from one church to another with a letter of good standing.
  3. By Christian experience – to make a statement of Christian experience.
